Work Wednesday: Lights, Camera, Trailer!

The great accomplishment of this past week—during which the family has been sick with a crazy, no-fun, icky, yucky virus—has been to create a book trailer for All Hallow’s ABC. What is a book trailer? Well, it’s basically a television ad for your book. Book trailers are short videos, often posted on YouTube, that serve to entice readers into picking up your novel, short story, comic book, picture book, etc.

Here’s mine:

I was struggling to come up with a concept for the trailer until my husband pointed out that since I created the images, I could just disappear things out of them. Then it occurred to me that animation, in its simplest form, is simply a set of still images. Some fiddling with Illustrator, a little more with iMovie and voila! Of course, the wonderful Netherworld Shanty by Kevin MacLeod sets the tone pretty well. His site, incomptech.com, offers royalty-free music for zero dollars—though donations are requested.

When they first were done a decade ago, book trailers were seen as an innovative way to get an audience interested in your story. Now most major publishers seem to have book trailers for their top authors. You see them on Hulu all the time.

My friend Mary did a trailer for her paranormal novel Lost in the Light that is short, but effective.

Do you need a book trailer? Who knows. As authors and businesspeople we have only so much time in our day, and it can be time consuming to create one. However, I have an unused degree in television production, and I like to fiddle. So there it is.

In news of how the book is doing, I got my first real “No” last week. It was polite, but firm, and I understood. The book was simply not a good fit for the store. C’est la vie. On the other hand, my sales for August beat my meager expectations. It’s nice when you know you’ve sold more books than were bought by friends and family.

Until next time… May the magic of books make your day bright.
